Reykjavik secures two fire-and-rescue Brontos for Iceland

Following a landmark deal, two Bronto aerial platforms were delivered to Greater Reykjavik Fire and Reescue Service (SHS) in early 2024. SHS visited the Bronto factory in Tampere in 2023 and 2024 for final inspections of their units, which included one Bronto F32TLK and one Bronto F45XR aerial platforms.
A new chapter for fire-and-rescue access in Iceland
SHS operates four facilities in the Reykjavik region, which have fielded more than 400 calls in the first four months of 2024. The two new aerials are the fourth and fifth Brontos deployed in the country, opening a new chapter of enhanced fire and rescue access for the urban area. The first Bronto aerial rescue platform for Iceland was delivered almost four decades ago. The customer chose Bronto because of their greater versatility when compared with turntable ladder trucks – particularly the excellent up-and-over capabilities, fast set-up time, and variable jacking.
Each aerial was customised for the needs of SHS, including ultrasonic collision guards, rescue ladder rung cold protection, an Interspiro air breathing system, CCS – Cold cut water cut system availability in cage and custom lockers.
Both also include an electrohydraulic remote-controlled water monitor and Akromatic jet/fog nozzle, with water flow rates of 2500 l/min for the F32TLK and 3800 L/min for the F45XR respectively. The radio remote control will help operators operate the boom from afar while getting in close to the fire, and the onboard cameras with integrated thermal imaging function in cage will maintain full view of the target.
Training and support
Aerial platform training was conducted at Greater Reykjavik Fire and Rescue Service’s premises in April 2024 by Bronto’s Swedish subsidiary BAB in-house service experts. The training was held over four days and covered unit handling, rules and regulationss, outreach, outriggers and booms, and the use of emergency procedures.
Training included both classroom and practical instruction. The goal, as always, was to ensure the customer’s operators are ready to handle any situation that arises in the field.
In the future, SHS will also be able to contact Bronto at any point during an operation with the help of Bronto One Remote Access.
Simulator
A Bronto One simulator was sold together with the aerial platforms, and delivered to SHS in October 2023, along with on-site training in Reykjavik. According to SHS, the simulator has been very useful so far, especially during winter time. The different fire stations plan to use the Bronto One simulator for continuous personnel training – especially in the main fire station in Reykjavik, where they can practice different fire and rescue situations with a 3D map of Reykjavik’s downtown area custom built for them.
F32TLK
The F32TLK is built for speed and efficiency in dense urban areas. Its design is compact, with a short transport length ideal for manoeuvring in traffic and between buildings. Key features include superior downward reach of 5.4 metres and a spacious, high-capacity (500kg) rescue cage with ±50 degrees rotation.
F45XR
A slightly larger urban option, the F-XR range has a transport length that comes in just under 12 metres, with 26.5 metres of outreach, and ±60 degrees cage rotation. It’s a versatile choice for meeting the needs of both urban and industrial fire and rescue in Iceland.
